Course Instructor:

Emery is based in Brooklyn, NY where she founded and currently runs her two companies: Water & Stone, a Creative Arts Therapy PLLC (a contemplative creative arts therapy group practice seeing clients from NY & NJ) and Firefly & Phoenix LLC (a company offering support for therapists curious about or building their private practices). Both companies grew out of Emery’s experiences living and working in Colorado, Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Long Island, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. She is the author of The Art of Business: A Guide for Creative Arts Therapists Starting on a Path to Self-Employment (JKP, 2013) which focuses on contracting with organizations and business basics. She is currently working on a second book focused more specifically on sharing other creative arts therapists’ voices on their entrepreneurial adventures. She further brings her creative curiosity and expertise to her role as mentor for other therapists braving the world of self-employment and those taking advantage of her wide array of continuing education workshops/programs for NJ LPATs, NY LCATs, and ATCB credential holders. Along with being in private practice over the past 15 years she mentors other therapists, supervises interns, guest lectures at George Washington University and is adjunct faculty at Nazareth University. She received her MA in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology: Art Therapy from Naropa University in Boulder, CO.

Course Description:

This workshop is going to be great for those who are curious about bringing new ideas into their existing private practice or those just starting to visualize their dreams and what they want to include for clients. Explore the many types of services (clinical and beyond) that can be offered to the community through a private practice and find the balance that feels best for you. Knowing the many options and how diversifying your services can support financial sustainability will open up the possibilities, so you can find the right fit for you! We’ll touch on who you want to work with and how you want to do it. Plus, we will explore the many ways to offer therapy services, nonclinical therapeutic options, and the difference between active and passive income streams. The ultimate goal is to have you walking away, able to pick a couple options that fit your style, interests, and energy level!

Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to…

  1. Identify at least 1 need that creative arts therapy can fill in their community.
  2. Name at least 2 ways having both clinical/therapy services and nonclinical/therapeutic services can better serve populations within their community.
  3. Draft at least 3 sentences geared towards clients that clarify in an ethically honest/open manner how creative arts therapy might meet their needs.
  4. Identify at least 2 ethical considerations that are important when working for or by yourself.
