Jerry Callan began his career as a live-in houseparent at what is now William George Agency for Children (formerly George Junior Republic) in the Finger Lakes region. After getting his master's in social work from University at Buffalo, he became director of staff development, associate residential director, and then supervisor of community services. He later joined Hillside Children’s Center, where he was a clinical supervisor, then director of the Residential Treatment Center. He also was director of admissions and then director of Hillside’s Learning Institute, responsible for staff training and development.

Callan also served in other roles, such as an executive mentor for the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, director of residential services at Crestwood Children’s Center, and director of Family Finding, an effective model for reconnecting children with their families.

He joined Nazareth College in 2015 as a clinical assistant professor and served as social work coordinator in the York Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute. In 2016, he became director of field education for the Greater Rochester Collaborative M.S.W. program.

Callan also has taught human service courses at Corning Community College, and completed Train-the-Trainer for multiple curricula including:
