Nazareth's Annual Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Published January 16, 2015

Nazareth College holds its annual celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 19 with a commemoration service in his honor. The commemoration service, a lively celebration of Dr. King’s legacy, will take place on campus from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. in the Golisano Academic Center Linehan Chapel. This ceremony is free and open to the public. The celebration will be focused on the theme “Revolutionary Love” and will include student speakers, singers and dancers. Undergraduate and graduate classes are suspended – and all administrative offices are closed – during this period so the campus community can gather together for this special event. An intercollegiate “MLK Co-Exist Dinner” will be held that evening at 6:30 at St. John Fisher College. For more information, contact the center for spirituality at 585-389-2303. Nazareth College is located at 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y. 14618.

The Nazareth College community will also be taking part in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Saturday, January 17 and Friday, January 23. Collaborating with other colleges and universities in the area, students will be serving the community at various sites throughout the city of Rochester. Contact Adam Lewandowski at alewand8@naz.edu for opportunities to volunteer.

Saturday, January 17 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

In collaboration with RochesterCares, Nazareth students will be working in Rochester on several community projects. Students will be bused downtown to the Stardust Ballroom where they will be part of the Rochester community to honor the memory of Dr. King. Service opportunities include working with Episcopal Senior Life in community dialogue with elders about civil rights or work at the Wilson Commencement Park, where they will lead an arts and crafts activity with youth based values of Dr. King.

Friday, January 23 from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Nazareth students will team up with students from St. John Fisher College to empower Rochester-area youth, as well as each other, to achieve their dreams through education in an “Equality Through Education” event. Students will be paired with the youth for activities based on Dr. King’s vision. Campus tours will be provided.
