Uniting Our Fractured Society, One of Two Talks with Bishop Robert W. McElroy at Nazareth College, Sept. 21-22
Nationalism vs. the Catholic Vision of the Common Good is the topic of discussion when Bishop Robert W. McElroy speaks at Nazareth College on September 21, at 7 p.m. His discussion is at the Nazareth College Shults Center and is free and open to the public. A native of San Francisco, Bishop Robert F. McElroy was appointed bishop of the Catholic Diocese of San Diego by Pope Francis in 2015. Described as "one of the most respected intellectual leaders of the Catholic Church in the United States," Bishop McElroy is ardent in his support of Catholic social teaching, astute in reading the "signs of the times," and forthright in addressing urgent issues of social concern, including the plight of refugees and migrants and issues of the economy and the environment. Bishop McElroy has a second discussion, Uniting Our Fractured Society, on Friday, Sept. 22, at 1:30 p.m., in the Linehan Chapel of Nazareth’s Golisano Academic Center, and it is free and open to the public. A well-known speaker and frequent contributor to America Magazine, he is the author of The Search for an American Public Theology: The Contribution of John Courtney Murray and Morality and American Foreign Policy: The Role of Ethics in International Affairs. He serves the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops on the ecumenical committee, the committee of domestic justice, and the committee on international affairs.
Bishop McElroy earned a bachelor’s degree in American history from Harvard University, a master’s in history and a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University, as well as a licentiate in theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and a doctorate in moral theology from the Gregorian University in Rome.
The talks are the first in the 2017-18 Shannon Lecture Series with the year’s theme being Reclaiming Our Common Humanity. Calling for mercy and tenderness, Pope Francis continually reminds us of our common humanity. This year marks the centenary of Father William H. Shannon's birth in 1917. Bishop Robert W. McElroy
