Grants fund York Institute clinics

Published July 31, 2020

Two grants totaling $40,000 from the Glover-Crask Charitable Trust are providing support to educate future health care professionals, form community partnerships, and provide care to underserved people from the Rochester area through Nazareth College's nationally recognized on-campus clinics in the York Wellness & Rehabilitation Institute (York Institute).

Nazareth's clinical education programs are an unusual constellation of speech-language, physical, occupational, creative arts (music and art) therapies, as well as social work services. These programs serve children and adults with a variety of developmental disabilities, orthopedic or neurological conditions, communication disorders, and emotional/psychological conditions. School of Health and Human Services students provide 15,000 faculty-supervised client visits/sessions annually serving over 3,500 people who either have no health insurance or for whom health insurance benefits have been depleted.

The York Institute is Nazareth's center forĀ interprofessional education and provides a dynamic teaching and learning environment for clinical education, research, and innovative care. The York clinics' approach provides life-changing care, especially through Nazareth's specialty programs for underserved populations, such as adults with brain injuries/neurological disorders, individuals with intellectual disabilities, and early assessment/intervention for children with disabilities and/or from backgrounds of poverty.

"Glover-Crask Charitable Trust supports the education of the next generation of health care professionals in leading-edge practices and allows faculty to form new community partnerships to evolve services to best meet the needs of the community," said Cathy Rasmussen, director of the York Institute. "Services provided through the York clinics meet critical needs for underserved individuals and families in our community."

Nazareth College's innovative interprofessional education is transforming how students in health and allied health professions are prepared through providing collaborative care that is life-changing for individuals and communities.
