Nazareth launches the Safe@Naz app

Published August 26, 2022

Nazareth College is introducing Safe@Naz, a new personal safety mobile app that provides students, faculty, staff, and community members an immediate connection to resources in an emergency, becomes the primary communication tool with Nazareth Campus Safety, and provides quick and easy access to safety resources (on and off campus) and departments (on campus).

Safe@Naz is free to students, staff, faculty, and community members.

"Keeping our campus community safe is our top priority, and Safe@Naz provides us with an extensive upgrade in personal safety," said Kevin Riordan, Fire and Life Safety Officer. "Safe@Naz maintains the on-campus location-based emergency alarm features of the current security escort alarm while adding a host of new features."

Features include:

  • You have a direct link to emergency services at your fingertips, on and off campus, including Nazareth Campus Safety, 911 (phone or text message), the national suicide prevention hotline, and the national poison control center.
  • Live chat with Campus Safety within the app for situations when you are unable or uncomfortable to speak. Chats are monitored at all times and provide two-way communication.
  • Request Campus Safety to respond to your location on campus through the Send Help function. The response time on campus is typically a matter of minutes.
  • You can disclose any pertinent personal emergency response information directly and confidentially to Campus Safety.
  • Submit a report of something you see, for non-urgent situations, directly to Campus Safety.
  • Access the campus-wide emergency response guide through the app, for a range of situations from bomb threats to medical needs.
  • Access the most-used on campus support departments through the Support Resources tab, including direct contacts and referral forms, where available.
  • Direct peer-to-peer safety support, available on and off campus.. These functions are not monitored by Campus Safety:
  • Social Escape allows you to get out of a potentially tough social situation by having the app call you at a designated time. This may provide an excuse for you to leave an uncomfortable situation.
  • Friend Walk shares a constantly updated map of your location with a person of your choice. This shared map will be updated in real time with your current location until you signal you have arrived safely. This allows someone to verify that you made it to your destination without incident.
  • I'm OK: Send a quick, customizable message to a person of your choice saying that you are OK, accompanied by a map of your current location.
