Music Therapy Clinic

Fall 2024

Planning for fall 2024 is underway. Please email nazmtclinic@mail.naz.edu for more information.

Music therapy uses music in the context of a therapeutic relationship to address the physical, communication, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of people of all ages. Music therapists are licensed professionals trained in music, therapeutic principles and methods, exceptionality, rehabilitation, and psychology. They are skilled in various musical genres and techniques and are qualified mental health practitioners in assessment, research, and treatment.

Music therapy is provided on its own or in co-treatment with physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, play therapy, and/or art therapy, depending on client needs and scheduling availability.

Potential Clients

The music therapy clinic serves clients of all ages and with a variety of disorders, including autism, traumatic brain injury, multiple disabilities, speech disorders, aphasia, physical impairments, and mental health needs.

Session Schedule
  • The clinic offers 50-minute weekly sessions during Nazareth's fall, spring, and early-summer terms.
  • Sessions may occur in an individual or a small group format, based on our evaluation of client needs and clinic schedules.
  • Some sessions are scheduled collaboratively with other co-therapy, depending on client need and scheduling availability.
  • Schedules are typically filled in at the beginning of each semester. Potential new clients will be placed on a waiting list for openings in subsequent terms.
Student Clinicians

Music therapy services are provided by students in the music therapy and graduate creative arts therapy programs, supervised by board-certified music therapist faculty licensed by the New York State Office of the Professions.

Any co-treatment is provided by appropriately supervised students in the other health disciplines at Nazareth.

Referrals
  • Clients are referred to the clinic from multiple sources, including self-referrals, other clinics and clients, family members, case managers, physicians, social workers, community music therapists, and community speech therapists.
  • Clients are assessed to determine eligibility for admission and to identify strengths, needs, and treatment options.
Eligibility and Fees
  • The clinic offers affordable services to individuals who have limited access to music therapy services due to financial, geographic, or other factors.
  • Services are free, however, donations are gratefully accepted.
