What is your major in school?

In the Fall of 2013 and the Spring of 2014 my major was English Literature. In Fall of 2014, I decided to become a double major. I changed my major and became a Communications and Media major with a Public Relations and Marketing strand as well as a Chinese major. I made the switch because I believed that these two majors not only complement one another, but also uniquely capture my main interests.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and I often identify with my background as a St.Lucian. I am currently a second year student with Junior status with many passions and talents that mainly stem from my elementary, junior-high, and high school careers. Between dancing, drawing, writing poetry, and fashion I have been able to find my niche in many different areas. Academically, I have been studying the Chinese language (specifically Mandarin, on and off) since the 6th grade as well as math and science throughout high school. Stemming from my exposure to the Chinese language, I studied abroad in Beijing, China twice. The first time I went was in the summer of 2012 for a 6-week culture and language immersion program with Americans Promoting Study Abroad (APSA) and the National Security Learning Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y). My second time, was during this past summer (Summer 2014), also for a 6-week culture and immersion program, on a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship through the University of Buffalo. I attended Medgar Evers College Preparatory School (MECPS) where I began my New York State Regents Examinations in the 7th grade and completed them by the 9th grade. From the 9th grade until about the 11th grade I took Advance Placement (AP) classes and later began a college program (the Smart Scholars Program) in the 11th grade until the 12th grade. This rigorous academic career set me up for the necessary steps that I needed to take once I began college at Naz. My academics always kept me busy but I always enjoyed going the extra mile and adding on a ton of extra-curricular activities to my busy schedule. I worked at the Brooklyn Museum of Art for 3 years in various positions, danced in my school's dance repertoire, wrote and still write for Culture Starved magazine, and more. I know, it's a lot to digest but that's a little bit about myself.

What internships and activities are you currently participating in or have completed?

Last year I babysat for a family in Pittsford and did a dance showcase in the Spring semester. This year, I am currently a dancer in the Nazareth College Dance Ensemble (a pre-professional dance company). I am also an event-planning intern with LifePrep@Naz; this internship is on-campus. Lastly, to put the cherry on top, I am the Co-President of the Inter-Ethnic Nazareth Coalition Club (INC).

How did you get involved with Career Services and what resources would you recommend to other students?

Last year I took it upon myself to visit Career Services and get my extensive resume focused and cleaned up. In doing so I met Lisa Heisman and was able to get a clearer view of what I would like to do in the near future and throughout my college career. She was very helpful, insightful, and open. This overall leads me to recommend others to utilize the resume and cover letters resource at Career Services.

What do you like the most about being a Nazareth College student?

This college is so small that I've had the chance to run into President Dan Braveman on several occasions on campus; I like that. This gives the college a homey atmosphere, similar to that of which I am used to. Nazareth is my home away from home and as a student that makes me lucky, because not very many students can say that they feel at home in their own college, unless they're in the right place.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to keep on doing what I am doing right and get better at it, it's working for me. Often times I am unsure of the future and I have come to realize that that is okay.

What is your major?

I am currently a Communication and Media major and I have a minor in Sports Marketing.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am from Orchard Park, home of the Buffalo Bills and I am one of the biggest Buffalo sports fans that you will ever meet. Bills, Bisons, Sabres, and Bandits. I am also a huge Boston Red Sox fan. I love all things sports and all things Buffalo. It's a running joke with many of my friends that you can't take me anywhere without knowing someone; I'm a crazy people person. I love the simple things in life and enjoy the little joys that come with each day. I am a very passionate and determined individual. I also enjoy taking photos. I have shot professionally for just over 5 years and it is always a joy. Capturing moments for people never gets old.

What internships and activities are you currently participating in or have completed?

I am currently interning for Nazareth Athletics running their Marketing and Promotions. I did this last school year as well. This past summer I interned for the Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, as a marketing and promotions intern. I am Yearbook Editor for my class, a student leader for Nazareth Christian Fellowship, a student ambassador for Nazareth and a resident assistant. I was previously sports editor for Nazareth's newspaper for two years.

How did you get involved with Career Services and what resources would you recommend to other students?

The first time I went to Career Services was my freshman year as an undeclared student. I had no idea what I wanted to do so I took some tests to kind of figure out what direction to go in as far as picking a course of study.

Later, after I decided on Communication and Media, I returned to Career Services for resume and cover letter help when I was beginning my internship search at the end of my sophomore year. Last year (my junior year), I returned to Career Services for more resume and cover letter help, as well as an evaluation of my LinkedIn profile.

I would recommend any student who is undeclared or unsure of their major to get some guidance from Career Services. I also would recommend that any sophomore, junior or senior (regardless if you're applying for internships or not) should get in there to get a working resume and at least a template for a cover letter to know how to write one. If you're a junior or senior, you absolutely have to get in there to have your LinkedIn profile evaluated. If you do not have one, go get one right now. I honestly think LinkedIn will be the norm and resumes won't be a thing in the next ten years.

What do you like most about being a Nazareth College student?

Everyone says this, but the community of the campus. It really is true. You can't walk across campus without saying hi to someone and it is the absolute best. Nazareth just feels like home.

What are your plans for the future?

Right now the plan is to find a job in Minor League Baseball. I absolutely loved my internship with the Buffalo Bisons this summer and I would be so pumped to start my career in the MILB. I intend to intern with a marketing agency in the spring just to try out account management to see if I like it, so I may end up applying for jobs there!

I am a marketing major, with a music and dance minor. I say that I’m focusing in advertising, brand strategy/development, PR and social media. I will be graduating in December 2014 and received a job offer from Archer Communications this semester!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born in the Philippines and raised in the island of Guam. Both of my parents taught me the fundamentals and concepts of business. I have always been passionate for the performing arts and music. I use those mindsets and disciplines, as well as my educational background in marketing at the workplace.

What internships and activities are you currently participating in or have completed?

I interned in the Nazareth College Arts Center with the Marketing and Publicity Manager and at Break the Ice Media as a Marketing Intern. I am currently the Marketing Associate at Archer Communications, a full service advertising and marketing communications firm. I also work for the Department of Theatre Arts as their student Marketing Associate and play the piano for the Nazareth College Catholic Community. I am also currently a member for the Nazareth College Dance Organization.

How did you get involved with Career Services and what resources would you recommend to other students?

It was a requirement for my Internship and Senior Seminar class to have an appointment with Career Services. I had my resume reviewed, figuring out key words and concepts that would make me attractive as a potential employee. I also got my Linkedin account reviewed and received help with researching and preparing for an interview with the company I am working for now.

What do you like most about being a Nazareth College student?

I love the flexibility and the ability to implement my major to things that I love. My passion has always been the performing arts and music and implementing my marketing communication skills created a new passion from it. I also love the approachability in all the departments of the college has in order for students to succeed.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to continue working for Archer Communications and start to settle down in Rochester or other parts of the country. I plan to continue helping out the theatre community here as well other projects that I come up with.

What was your major in school?

I majored in Psychology and minored in Business.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I recently graduated from Nazareth this past Spring. I loved my time there and want to enter the field of Higher Education. Currently, I work at a Marina on Sodus Bay and am getting ready to pursue a Master’s Degree in Higher Education Student Affairs. In my free time I enjoy running, yoga, boating, and cooking.

What internships and activities are you currently participating in or have completed?

During my years at Naz, I was involved in a few different internships. I traveled to Florida to participate in the Disney College Program for a semester. I did two internships with The Make-A-Wish Foundation in Rochester. The first internship was in Special Events Planning and the second was in the area of Development/Fundraising. My final semester at Naz, I did an internship with our Student Conduct Office.

How did you get involved with Career Services and what resources would you recommend to other students?

I came into Naz undeclared and was very unsure of what I wanted to major in. The spring semester of my Freshman year, after not having any luck picking a major and not having a clear career path, I decided to go to Career Services. There, I was given a few different assessments to help me delve deeper into finding a major and a career field that would fit. The assessments provided more insight into several careers that matched my personality and fit my goals.

I would recommend that students utilize the many resources that Career Services has to offer. They can help with anything from picking a major/career to job searching and professional matters. I utilized Career Services a lot during my senior year; they helped me tremendously with the resume and cover letter writing process. They also gave good tips on Networking and Job Searching engines. As a recent graduate, I plan continue to utilize the office for guidance with interviewing skills and job searching. The counselors are very knowledgeable, helpful, and go above and beyond for Naz students.

What do you like most about being a Nazareth College student?

I enjoyed my time at Nazareth very much. My favorite part about being a Nazareth student was that I never felt like I was just a number. What stands out to me to this day is how welcoming and helpful people at Nazareth are. Many of the faculty, staff, and students go out of their way to help students succeed and meet their goals.

What are your plans for the future?

It is my plan to pursue the field of Higher Education, specifically in the area of Student Affairs. The areas that I am interested in are Admissions, Academic Advisement, Career Services, and Student Conduct. I have met incredible people in these offices at Nazareth and am excited about entering this field. I have been inspired by the enthusiasm that many of the staff have for their jobs. Currently, I am looking for a job or an internship at a college and am applying to Graduate Programs for Fall 2015.

Meghan Gillen '14

What was your major?

Communications and Rhetoric

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Meghan Gillen. I graduated from Nazareth in May of 2014. Originally I wanted to go into Physical Therapy but realized it wasn’t my passion and changed to Communications, where I found my niche. I am a huge nerd and like the majority of the population, watch way too much Netflix. It was actually my obsession with media that led me to Communications; where else can you write about Breaking Bad as a paper in college or do your senior thesis on Futurama?

What internships and activities are you currently participating in or have completed?

While at Nazareth I made sure that I kept busy. During the summer after my junior year I participated in an internship for Marketing at a local company called Lobel’s of New York. The work was mainly collecting and analyzing data regarding what was going on with the company on line, it gave me a really good introduction to the Marketing field. The following spring I became the Marketing and Event Planning Intern at the Ad Council of Rochester. Knowing that I would be graduating that May I wanted to get new experiences and connections out of this internship, and I achieved both. I was able to help with several events, aid with PR, and utilize my graphic design skills to create various forms of advertising. On campus I wrote for the Gleaner several times which gave me an outlet to write creatively aside from assigned papers. I also worked two jobs on campus, one in Career Services and the other with Emily Carpenter in the Internship program. Both jobs allowed me to obtain both skills and connections that undoubtedly helped with my post-graduate career.

How did you get involved with Career Services and what resources would you recommend to other students?

I transferred to Naz the spring of my sophomore year. Come fall my junior year, I went to Career Services to get help with my resume. Danielle really helped me reorganize and fine tune my content, you never really know how many little things you wouldn’t think to do that could make an employer more likely to consider you. As previously mentioned, the next semester I started working for Career Services and I saw the benefits not only for myself but for every student that came in to meet with a Career Counselor. Personally speaking I have spoken with all of the counselors about various career questions; resume writing, grad school, possible future paths etc. They really are a valuable resource and help you not only with the tangible tasks (resumes, cover letters, etc.) but they really help give you peace of mind about the ever-daunting future. Besides actually meeting with a counselor, one of the resources that I really found helpful was HireAFlyer. The people who post jobs there really are looking for Nazareth students/grads specifically. It was how I found both jobs on campus and also the job I currently have now.

What do you/did you like most about being a Nazareth College student?

As I said, Nazareth was the second school to attend. What made me transfer was a lack of personal attention that I received at my previous school. I was more of a number than a name. At Nazareth every professor I have ever had not only knows my name in class, but seeing them in passing two years later, they remember me and ask me how I am doing. Speaking specifically about my major, the Comm/Rhet program allowed me to further explore all of my options within the Communications field; Public Relations, Marketing, Graphic Design, Journalism etc. This helped me find exactly what I liked best and having a wide range of knowledge within the field has proven to be valuable. In interviews being a jack of all trades, in a manner of speaking, really wowed employers.

What are your plans for the future?

Currently I work as a Digital Marketing Specialist for a company called American Aerogel. The company manufactures and sells insulated packaging solutions for temperature sensitive products. It is a highly advanced technology that allows important products, like pharmaceuticals, that need to stay at a constant specific temperature to be shipped for a few days. I work with the engineers in the company as well as the sales team to help create ways to get our product known in the industry. Although a fairly new company, we are rising fast in the industry and even have NASA as one of our clients! I really love my job and the environment that I work in. I plan on staying here for the foreseeable future, but I know that eventually I want to become a Marketing Director and have a little more responsibility. Once I gain enough experience and knowledge, I plan on branching out.

What was your major at Nazareth?

Marketing with a minor in Information Technology

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am from Waterford, NY, just a few minutes north of Albany. I am a very passionate, determined and purposeful person who enjoys a lot of things in life. You’ll probably never see me sitting down and relaxing because I like to be involved. Besides the serious things I talk about below, I love being physically active, reading a good book and enjoying time with friends.

What internships and activities were you involved in?

  • Marketing and Communications department media relations student worker: I worked with my supervisors to write press releases for the college as well as publish event submissions to be displayed on the College’s website. I also wrote Merit badges for students so that they can keep track of their achievements, such as Dean’s List, athlete honors and/or honor society honors.
  • Student Ambassador at Admissions: Follow me on twitter @j_lachell! I tweet about events and general Nazareth and Rochester information for prospective students as well as write blog posts.I also gave tours to prospective students.
  • President of the Undergraduate Association
  • Events and Marketing Intern at the Ad Council of Rochester, where I assisted in the promotion and logistics of the agency’s two major events. Other tasks included updating the website, attending professional development opportunities, and providing an extra set of hands where/when needed.
  • Women’s golf team
  • Mohawk Global Logistics import intern: I did this internship over in the summer of 2014 and I worked on a team of four and focused on the importing for one of their major clients. I collected data for new shipments and then tracked them until they came to the U.S. Then, I would clear them through customs and complete any paperwork needed for the client and/or shipment.

How did you get involved with Career Services and what resources would you recommend to other students?

I got involved with Career Services my freshman year at Nazareth when I decided I wanted to switch my major but didn’t know where to start. I went in and talked to a counselor and they had given me some online questionnaires to take. Once I took these, I went back in to analyze the results, which consisted of understanding my skills and interests I already possessed as well as what fields I could apply them to. After that meeting, I felt very confident with going through and switching my major. The following year, I decided I wanted to start looking for internships because I had always been told it’s never too soon to start applying. I began building my resume and cover letter that year as well as took advantage of the mock interview. Since then, I have gone back about 3-5 times a year to keep my resume and cover letter updated as well as for career advice.

I recommend doing a mock interview, especially sooner rather than later. Although I didn’t have an interview until six months after my mock interview, it was a great way to get prepared for when the opportunity arose. It forced me to understand my nervous habits and gave me enough time to overcome those as well as prepare strong answers to interview questions. I also recommend asking them for help with your LinkedIn profile. Although it’s a form of social media probably something my generation should be great at, there are a lot of ins and outs of the website that can be difficult to discover and understand on your own. With that being said, the counselors can show you how to use each widget to its maximum use.

I also recommend going to Career Services about any general career questions because it allows you to create relationships with the counselors. The counselors then know who you are and are able to help push you in the right direction since they understand your interests and have seen you grow.

What did you like most about being a Nazareth College student?

I love the relationships I’ve built over the years, both with fellow classmates, friends, faculty, and staff. It seems to be that everyone wants to see you succeed and that has inspired me to push myself to be the best that I can be. There are many opportunities at Nazareth, some may require some digging around, but they prepare you very well for the future. I can honestly say I am extremely proud to be a Golden Flyer and graduate from Nazareth excited to enter the workforce because I felt prepared.

What are your plans for the future?

In May 2015, I started a full-time position as a Sales Development Representative at Skyhigh Networks. In the next 3-5 years, my plan is to continue working and I'd like to remain in a career environment where I can make a difference in the world. Skyhigh allows companies to securely adopt cloud services - decreasing the chances of data leakages or breaches (there's a lot more that goes into it but this is the gist of what we do). To me, we are making positive impacts for many companies as we are protecting their data. I've always had a passion for making positive impacts and I'm hoping my career path allows me to continue to do this. I'd then like to go back to get a master's degree - potentially an MBA program with a concentration in leadership. I greatly enjoy learning and I feel like continuing education will make me a valuable player in the business world

What is your major?

I started my freshman year as an English Literature major, but switched to Communications & Media after taking a few core classes like, Intro to Media Studies. I am also a double minor in Business Management and Marketing.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Taylor Wroblewski and I am a senior (!) at Nazareth College. I am a Communications & Media major, hoping to pursue a career in Marketing Communications once I graduate college. I am very involved on campus - I am a part-time student worker in the Career Services office, have an internship in the Marketing & Communications department, and am a Resident Assistant.  Here are a few things you should know about me : I’ve seen almost every episode of How I Met Your Mother, New Girl, and Parks & Recreation. You will rarely see me walking around campus without a coffee cup in my hand.  I love to read, and one of my favorite books is by Mindy Kaling called Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? I also love watching football and baseball, especially when the Denver Broncos and the Boston Red Sox are playing.

What internships and activities are you currently participating in or have completed?

I completed an internship with the Rochester Broadway Theatre League this past spring, and am starting a marketing communications internship this upcoming fall and spring. I was an Orientation Leader my sophomore year, and a SOC-IT (Student Orientation Coordinator - In Training) my junior year.  This will also be my second year as a Resident Assistant, working closely with upperclassmen. I have loved all of these experiences as I have been able to work with freshmen and upperclassmen on campus. These leadership roles have really prepared me for the internships and career(s) lying ahead of me!

How did you get involved with Career Services and what resources would you recommend to other students?

I have been working in the Career Services office for over four years, and I would highly recommend utilizing their resources as early as possible! Career Services offers resume & cover letter assistance, helps with job searches, career counseling, and more. As a freshman, I was able to create my resume almost immediately, and I could build on it as I gained more experience throughout my college career. I would also recommend using Career Services to explore more career options!

What do you like most about being a Nazareth College student?

My favorite part about being a Nazareth College student is the friendly and welcoming community. The professors, staff, and faculty truly make campus feel like a second home. The other student workers and RA’s have also created a strong support system for me over the years. It is comforting to know that someone always has your back, wherever you go!

What are your plans for the future?

Currently, I hope to pursue a career in Marketing Communications. After graduation, I am hoping to apply for Nazareth’s IMC Graduate Program (Integrated Marketing Communications) and work as a GRA (graduate resident assistant), combining my interests of marketing and higher education.
