Biography

Performances include leading baritone roles in The Gypsy Princess, I Pagliacci, L’amico Fritz, Samson et Dalila, La Cambiale di matrimonio, Le Nozze di Figaro, L’Elisir d’Amore, The Emperor of Atlantis and Fidelio. Other operatic roles include Bastianello the Elder in Musto’s Bastianello, Falstaff in Verdi’s Falstaff, Almaviva in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Raymondo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Junius in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, El Padre in Milhaud’s Le Pauvre Matelot, and Bohechio in Braga’s Opera 1492. He has also performed at concert venues in Jinan, China, the United Kingdom, the Dominican Republic, and at the Merkin Concert Hall in New York City

Martínez, a skilled singing-actor of extended vocal range, feels at home in dramatic and comic roles, as well as oratorio, musical theater and Spanish opera and zarzuela repertoire. Oratorio appearances include Verdi’s Requiem under Murray Sidlin, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis under Robert Shaw and the Ninth Symphony under Grant Cooper. This is addition to performances of The Messiah, Magnificat, Carmina Burana, Elijah, The Creation, Mozart, Brahms and Fauré’s Requiem, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Brubeck’s La Fiesta de la Posada, Rutter’s Mass of the Children, R.V. William’s Dona Nobis Pacem, Pärt’s Passio, and McClure’s Dante’s Inferno among many others.

Martínez was recently appointed as Director of the Music Performance Program and the Master of Music in Performance and Pedagogy at Nazareth College, in Rochester, New York, where he also serves as Coordinator of Vocal Studies. Teaching duties include applied voice (classical and non-classical styles), vocal pedagogy, song literature, performance techniques and opera courses. Martínez taught at the State University of New York (SUNY), College at Fredonia, at the Eastman School of Music Community Music School, and at the National Conservatory of Music in his native country the Dominican Republic. 

Martínez, a sought after adjudicator, stage director and clinician, is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), and was selected to participate in the exclusive NATS Intern Program in 2003. Martínez served as On-Site Coordinator for the 2005 NATS Intern Program and as President of the Central New York-Finger Lakes NATS Chapter (CNYFL-NATS). Martínez is currently Governor for the New York District-NATS. Stage directing credits include engagements with the Rochester Lyric Opera, the Cadenza Workshop and the National Conservatory of Music in Dominican Republic. 

In August 2005, Martínez was invited as guest conductor for the National Choir’s 50th Anniversary celebrations in the Dominican Republic, where he has since returned as guest conductor, stage director and master teacher for the Ministry of Culture and the General Office of Fine Arts. In July 2016 Martínez was named an Honorary Member of the National Company of Classical Singers, a state sponsored opera company, and in October 2015 was appointed as Arts Consultant for the Ministry of Culture for the second time. Martínez currently serves as Music Director at the Pinnacle Lutheran Church, in Henrietta, New York.

Martínez holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in Vocal Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Sociology from Luther College.
