Winners of Nazareth College Music Department Concerto/Aria competitions to join Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony on stage February 18 and 19

Published January 19, 2017

Each year, undergraduate majors from the Nazareth College Music Department compete for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Nazareth College Symphony Orchestra and Nazareth College Wind Symphony in the Concerto/Aria Competition. This year there are four winners—Brandon McCardle, Hadley Strelau, Ben Reisinger, and Victoria Moore—who will perform during two concerts.

The 80-member Nazareth College Symphony Orchestra (Nancy Strelau, conductor) will present its annual Rising Stars concert featuring three of the competition winners at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 in Linehan Chapel. The concert will feature music education major Brandon McArdell (trumpet) in Hummel's Concerto in Eb. Hadley Strelau (mezzo soprano), a vocal performance major, will perform two Mozart pieces: Batti batti O bel Masetto and Voi Che Sapete from the Marriage of Figaro. And finally, Ben Reisinger (baritone), also a performance major, will perform Stefano Donaudy's O del Mio Amato Ben and Carlos Gian Menotti's Bob's Bedroom. The Rising Stars concert will also feature guest conductor Dr. Jefferson Svengsouk on Carmen Suite No 1 & 2, composed by George Bizet. Svengsouk is an emergency medicine doctor in the Rochester area who won the honor of conducting via WXXI's online auction. The concert will end with Treasure Planet/Atlantis Soundtrack Suite by James Newton Howard.

The Nazareth College Wind Symphony (Jared Chase, conductor) will present its Sanctuaries concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017 in Linehan Chapel. The concert will feature the final competition winner, music therapy major Victoria Moore (saxophone) performing the monumental Frozen Cathedral by John Mackey. The piece promises to be fascinating to any percussive lover as percussionists will surround the chapel as they play crystal glasses, crotales on timpani, tam-tam resonated with superball mallets, and other non-traditional instrumcnet. The second piece in the concert is Escapades by John Williams, from Steven Spielberg's film Catch Me If You Can. The concert will finish with Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor by Bach and Sonata 20 and 22 by Giovanni Gabrieli.

Both concerts are free and open to the public.
