Nazareth's nursing program ranked among the best in the New York state

Nazareth College's nursing degree program ranks among the 2020 Best RN Programs. RegisteredNursing.org, a nursing advocacy organization, just released its list of 2020 Best RN programs and Nazareth is #12 on the list of best nursing programs in New York — and is the highest ranked in the Rochester area.

Nursing programs were assessed on several factors that represent how well a program supports students towards licensure and beyond. RegisteredNursing.org ranked the top 50 nursing schools in New York by analyzing current and historical National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) "pass rates," meaning the percentage of graduates who pass the exam, out of the 101 RN programs in the state.

"Nazareth is extremely honored to have our nursing program recognized as one of the top in New York State," said Mary Dahl Maher, Ph.D., M.P.H., chair of Nazareth's Nursing Department and director of the public health undergraduate program. "I'm so proud to say that the last five graduating classes of our Nazareth nursing students have earned a 100% pass rate in their first attempt on the NCLEX-RN exam."

Nazareth's nursing degree program prepares nurses to be culturally competent caregivers with an awareness of global health issues, ready for the complexity and challenge of modern health care. With a curriculum rich with humanities, biological sciences, and social sciences, Nazareth's goal is to prepare professional nurse generalists who possess an in-depth knowledge of nursing and are able to provide culturally congruent nursing care to diverse patients and families across all health care settings.

Nazareth's nursing major accepts applicants directly into the program as first-year students and students have the advantage of interprofessional education and interaction with fellow School of Health & Human Services students, including occupational therapy, physical therapy, art therapy, music therapy, speech therapy, and social work majors. Nursing also collaborates closely with the public health program, for students interested in a public health dual major or minor. Each nursing student has a nursing faculty advisor for guidance and support throughout nursing studies.

RegisteredNursing.org says the state of New York is on track to becoming one of the top regions in the country for nursing employment. In fact, a report by the Center for Health Workforce Studies (latest update 2018) states 80% of deans and directors of nursing programs report "many jobs" are available for newly trained RNs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the mean average salary for an RN in New York at $85,610.
