Level I This course includes the basic study of Orff techniques such as the pentatonic scale, simple borduns, the ostinato, and playing pitched and unpitched percussion instruments and the soprano recorder. Topics and skills in this highly participatory course will also include vocal and rhythmic training, movement, and improvisation. A degree in music or strong musicianship is required.
Level II This course builds on the foundation laid in Level I. Folk melodies, all diatonic modes, mixed meter, and rhythms from many parts of the world are included. Accompaniments, musical forms, and improvisations are more complex. Both alto and soprano recorders are studied. Music, movement, and speech are synthesized in cooperative learning lessons. Successful completion of Level I is required.

BethAnn Hepburn teaches 4th-6th graders at Henry Defer Intermediate School in Streetsboro, Ohio. She has the designation of Master Teacher with the Ohio Department of Education. She is an endorsed teacher education instructor BethAnn Hepburnfor the American Orff-Schulwerk Association and is on faculty of Orff certification courses at Trinity University in Texas, Villanova University, and the University of Hawai’i. BethAnn is a regular presenter for Orff chapters throughout the United States, and has trained teachers in China and Singapore. She is the past Professional Development chair for AOSA, and General Music Professional Development Chair for the Ohio Music Education Association.

is the music specialist at Bell Prairie Elementary and was named Teacher of the Year in 2013 for the North Kansas City schools. She has served as AOSA Region III Representative and Recording Secretary. Connie is an active presenter and also teaches Level II Orff Schulwerk Basic Pedagogy at Baker University.
Karen Medley is an elementary music specialist in the Pentucket Regional School District in northeastern Massachusetts. Formerly a teacher in the Clark County Schools (Las Vegas, NV) and a teacher in the Memphis City Schools (TN) for over 20 years, she received her BME from the Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester). She also studied at the University of Memphis, where she earned a Master of Music with a Concentration in Orff Studies and completed her Orff Teacher Training Level I-III and Master Class.
Presenter at eleven AOSA National Conferences, Karen has taught many workshops, in-services and teacher training courses across the United States, including workshops in Oahu and Maui. Currently, Karen teaches in summer teacher-training programs through the University of Alaska (Anchorage), UNLV (Las Vegas, NV), and the Eastman School of Music. Karen has taught many courses and workshops introducing classroom and preschool teachers to Orff-Schulwerk. In 1983 and again in 1995 she was a guest lecturer in New Zealand, presenting courses and workshops through the Teacher’s College of Auckland University and throughout the country.
Karen has directed several children’s choruses whose performances include singing Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, opening the National Blues Awards, performing at the 1989 AOSA National Conference in Atlanta, and singing Carmina Burana and The Nutcracker with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. A recipient of the Rotary Award for Teacher Excellence in Memphis City Schools (1984) and a contributing writer for Music and You (Macmillan/McGraw-Hill), Karen’s arrangements have been featured in The World Sings: International Folk Songs (Memphis Musicraft Pub.) and Las Vegas Writes III.
Karen served on the AOSA National Board of Trustees from 1987-2001 as Regional Representative for two terms and also as National Conference Chairperson for the 1994, 1996, and 2000 AOSA National Conference. Karen recently served on the AOSA National Board of Trustees and was the National Conference Chairperson for the 2007 AOSA Conference in San Jose, CA.
