All Hands and Hearts Disaster Relief - Texas

Social Issue/Focus Area: disaster recovery and rebuilding

When: Friday, January 3, 2020 – Saturday, January 11, 2020 (winter break)

Description: All Hands and Hearts (AHAH) is a community organization that focuses on delivering a smart response to people reeling from disaster  domestically or internationally. Provide support and relief to areas recovering from Hurricane Harvey by rebuilding and cleaning up schools and homes.

About this Organization

AHAH – Smart Response in Coastal Bend, TX, is committed to effectively and efficiently addressing the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. AHAH arrives early for first response and stays late to rebuild schools and homes in a disaster-resilient way.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on August 25, 2017, bringing unprecedented destruction to Texas. The Coastal Bend region was hit especially hard, with homes affected by storm surge and rising waters, and much tree and roof damage from high-speed winds. This caused top-down water damage, debris and tree hazards, and long-term struggles to keep homes dry.

In January 2018, the program transitioned into the recovery phase, working with homeowners to make necessary repairs. Repairing homes involves non-structural interior finish work--specifically, repairing and replacing damaged building materials to provide homeowners with a finished place to live. Repairs to homes follow resiliency guidelines and may include installing drywall, insulation, painting, flooring, and more.
