Gamma Kappa Alpha Italian Honor Society 

About

The Gamma Kappa Alpha, National Italian Honor Society, acknowledges exceptional academic performance in Italian language, literature, and culture and is open to membership at institutions of higher learning in the United States and Canada.

Eligibility: 

  • Student must be actively engaged in the study or research in the field of Italian language, literature, and linguistics. 
  • Student must have at least a B average in Italian and be at least in the upper 35% of their class.
  • No student may be considered who has less than two courses in Italian at the college level, nor may a student be considered who has not taken advanced courses beyond the intermediate level at those institutions offering such courses. 

The induction ceremony usually takes place at the end of the Spring semester. Interested students should submit their application here by the end of February.

GKA Scholarship Award Information 

The organization recognizes outstanding undergraduate scholarship in the field of Italian by awarding annually the Gamma Kappa Alpha Award for Scholarship.

Amount of Award: One $500 award yearly, contingent on availability of funds and subject to approval by the Board of Directors

Deadline: Friday, March 21, 2025

Requirements: Submit an entry in the form of an original essay in the field of Italian literature, linguistics, or culture together with transcripts of all colleges attended (if more than one) and a letter of nomination and recommendation written by the Academic Advisor. The latter is responsible for assembling a nomination package for each student.

  • Essay must be written in Italian.
  • Essays must consist of a minimum of two thousand (2000) words to a maximum of two thousand five hundred (2500) words, i.e. eight (8) to ten (10) pages, type-written or computer generated.

Congratulations

Nazareth student Jordyn Bagley is one of two national winners of the GKA Award for Scholarship in 2024 for a well-written, well-documented paper written in Italian, "Nell'Italia moderna."
