The Beauty Queen of Leenane brings dark comedy to the Nazareth College Theatre and Dance Department Feb 10-19

Published January 13, 2017

The Nazareth College Theatre and Dance Department and Theatre League are pleased to present The Beauty Queen of Leenane. This is the department's third production of the season and features an intimate cast of acting, musical theatre, and theatre arts students. The show will run February 10, 11, 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m.; and February 11 and 19 at 2 p.m. in Studio Theatre A48 at the Nazareth College Arts Center.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane contains strong language and some violence and is intended for mature audiences.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

Set in the mountains of Connemara, County Galway, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan—a plain and lonely spinster in her early 40s—and Mag—her manipulative, aging mother, whose interference in Maureen’s first and possibly final chance at love sets in motion a series of events that leads towards the play’s terrifying dénouement. No twist or turn is out of question in this script.

The play, written by Martin McDonagh is a co-winner of the 1998 Lucille Lortel Award for outstanding play and winner of four Tony Awards.

CAST AND PRODUCTION TEAM

Maureen Folan will be played by B.F.A. musical theatre senior Claire Ganem, and her mother, Mag Folan, by B.F.A. acting senior Alexus Maxam. Pato Dooley, will be played by theatre arts freshman and recent School of the Arts graduate Demetrio Alomar, and Ray Dooley by B.F.A. acting senior Josh Feldman.

The production is lead by director and faculty member Dr. Matthew Ames. Also behind the scenes are students Katie Thomas (assistant director/fight captain), Katlyn Feder (stage manager), Alanna Underwood (props master), Briar-Rose Murphy (costume designer); and faculty Yuanting Zhao (chairperson), Alexandra Anthony (production manager/technical director), Emily Stork (lighting/sound design), and Mary Farmer (costume shop manager).
