Nazareth officially becomes Nazareth University, June 1

After operating as a college for 99 years, Nazareth University celebrated both its official transition to university status and its new name in a historic celebration on campus May 31. The event also marked the unveiling of Nazareth University’s new visual identity, including an updated logo that celebrates its rich history while repositioning the Nazareth brand to reflect the institution’s new name. The transition to Nazareth University — which legally takes effect at midnight on June 1, 2023 — ushers in another century of Nazareth educating true changemakers who positively impact the world through their life's work.

Nazareth named a teach-out institution for students at soon-to-close Medaille University

Nazareth has been named a teach-out partner for Medaille University, as students at the Buffalo-based private institution — which announced that it will permanently close on August 31, 2023 — begin the process of selecting a new school to attend. Under the teach-out agreement between Nazareth and Medaille, signed on May 17, students at Medaille have the opportunity to complete their fields of study at Nazareth with no transfer, admission, or application fees and at a cost of attendance — including room and board — equal to or less than what those students currently pay at Medaille.

Birds of a Feather Drive Together: Naz & Fisher mascots tee-off for a good cause at Oak Hill Country Club

Traditionally “battling beaks” as sports rivals, Nazareth’s Swoop the Golden Flyer and St. John Fisher University’s mascot Cardinal instead teamed up for the “Birds of a Feather Drive Together” event just days before the PGA Championship brings thousands of golf spectators to Oak Hill.

Nazareth celebrates 96th Commencement on May 12 and 13 on campus at the Golisano Training Center

Nazareth College celebrates the Class of 2023 at its 96th Commencement ceremonies in the Golisano Training Center on campus. The graduate ceremonies are Friday, May 12, at 6 p.m., and the undergraduate ceremonies are Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m., and 2 p.m. Each of the ceremonies will be livestreamed; see Commencement 2023.

Major summer renovation on library to enhance student experience

Nazareth began construction on a major library renovation that was co-designed by students to enhance their overall campus experience. President Beth Paul ceremonially started the renovation work at the Lorette Wilmot Library on Friday, May 5, with a ceremonial first swing of a purple and gold sledgehammer.

Nazareth holds inaugural Lavender Graduation for LGBTQIA+ community

Nazareth held its inaugural Lavender Graduation ceremony on campus on April 25 to honor Nazareth’s LGBTQIA+ undergraduate and graduate students. Lavender Graduation ceremonies were established in 1995 and have been held at hundreds of institutions across the United States. At Nazareth, the ceremony was open to supporters of students who self-identified as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and 75 people attended.

Student Nina DeMilta earns civic fellowship for her community impact work

Nazareth junior Nina DeMilta ‘24, a music therapy major with a minor in interdisciplinary interfaith studies, has been selected as a 2023 Newman Civic Fellow for making an impact on her community through social justice, community engaged learning abroad, and peer education and leadership.

Yellow Ribbon program now includes Nazareth graduate students

Nazareth is expanding its participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program for veterans and dependents to include Nazareth graduate and certificate students in fall 2023. Nazareth already provides funding to unlimited eligible students for undergraduate studies.

Nazareth’s VP for Advancement Darrell Bell honored for inclusion leadership

Nazareth’s Vice President for Advancement Darrell Bell is proud of his role in breaking down barriers and creating space for advancement professionals of color to have a voice. He was awarded the Charles A. Wright Opportunity and Inclusion Leadership Award from the Council of Advancement and Support of Education, or CASE, at their District II conference in New York City in March 2023.

One theme was clear at Nazareth’s 2023 Teaching Excellence and Student Support awards this month: “We’re committed to our students,” said Lisa Hiley '02, Ph.D., winner of the full-time faculty teaching excellence award. Five faculty and staff were honored at the event March 23, 2023.

Guiding Eyes partners with Naz for monthly dog training on campus

Nazareth’s InterProfessional Animal-Assisted Wellness Collaborative, or IPAW, and IPAW Club are collaborating with the Monroe Region Guiding Eyes for the Blind group to bring training classes to campus. Guiding Eyes provides guide dogs to individuals with vision loss. The group holds once a month meetings, typically the first Tuesday evening of the month in the Shults Center Forum. Puppy raisers and dogs from all levels are welcome and campus students are encouraged to participate.

Jeffrey Allan chosen to lead Nazareth’s Institute for Technology, AI, and Society

Nazareth's Institute for Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Society, or ITAS, has hired Jeffrey Allan as its new director. The AI technology expert is poised to usher Nazareth to be a leader at the forefront of ethics and artificial intelligence. He has two decades of experience from Fortune 500 companies to Silicon Valley startups and is also a psychologist who knows an ethical lens is crucially needed in the fast-paced world of business leaders, policy makers, and other professionals.

Bestselling author Robin Wall Kimmerer speaks at Nazareth College on March 7

On the heels of winning a MacArthur Fellow grant — the so-called genius grant — author Robin Wall Kimmerer is speaking at Nazareth at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, in Nazareth Arts Center’s Callahan Theater. The event is free, and no tickets are required. The theater seats nearly 1,000 people, and doors open at 4:30 p.m. ASL interpretation provided.

New Flower City Down Syndrome Network Scholarship established at Nazareth

A new Flower City Down Syndrome Network Scholarship at Nazareth will help prepare more teachers and other professionals dedicated to helping children with Down Syndrome. The Flower City Down Syndrome Network is giving Nazareth $25,000 for an endowed scholarship.

Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties opens Thursday

Nazareth’s Theatre and Dance Department presents Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties, written by Jen Silverman and directed by Cara Hinh. This comedic, absurd, stylized, queer-centric play takes the stage in the Nazareth Arts Center’s Callahan Theater on Thursday, February 16; Friday, February 17; and Saturday, February 18, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, February 18, and Sunday, February 19, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 each, and $10 each for senior citizens. Buy tickets: Nazareth Arts Center Box Office. An opening night reception is in the lobby of Callahan Theater from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Battle of the Beaks is Back

The Battle of the Beaks rivalry and charitable effort returns to Nazareth as the Golden Flyers men’s and women’s basketball teams take on St. John Fisher on Saturday, February 11. The women play in Kidera gym at 5 p.m., and the men play at 7 p.m. A big part of the Battle of the Beaks each year is the fundraising efforts that are coordinated by Nazareth students.
