The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 may reduce your federal income tax liability. To help you determine whether you're eligible for federal tax credits related to education expenses, you will receive a 1098-T form.
By the first week in February, you will receive in the mail your Federal Tax Form 1098-T, which documents your enrollment at Nazareth University to the Internal Revenue Service and your (or your parents') possible eligibility for various federal income tax credits, namely the American Opportunity Tax Credit (Hope Credit) and Lifetime Learning Tax Credit.
Nazareth University cannot determine your eligibility for these tax credits, nor the amount you may claim. Consult your tax preparer or the IRS for advice and detailed information regarding the provisions of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education, found from the IRS website, explains tax benefits for higher education and may be beneficial in preparing your tax returns. The IRS can be reached at 800-829-1040 or www.irs.gov
Get your 1098-T tax document electronically
As of the 2017 tax year, eligible students can receive an electronic copy of the 1098-T tax form through NazNet Self-Service. In addition to reducing paper, the other advantages to an electronic 1098-T are:
By consenting to view the 1098-T electronically, you will consent to no longer receiving a paper form 1098-T. You will have access to view and print all of your current and future 1098-T statements until you remove your consent. The electronic 1098-T form is identical to a printed form. At any time you can return to the consent form in NazNet Self-Service to remove your consent. Removing consent is effective immediately and can be verified by visiting the form at any time. Removing consent applies to all future 1098-T forms issued. Previously issued 1098-T's will not be reissued as paper forms if consent is revoked.
To consent to view your 1098-T electronically:
Electronic 1098-T forms will be available to view until at least December 31st of the year following original issuance. Electronic viewing of 1098-T forms is not available to students who withdraw from the University prior to graduation and to those who do not grant consent to view their forms online.
If you don't make a selection, your 1098-T form will be mailed to you and you won't be able to view it online. Students consenting to receive an electronic 1098-T will receive an e-mail by the end of January indicating that they are available.
If your contact or address information changes please update with the Registration & Records Office at: https://forms.naz.edu/login/?next=/registrar/change_address/ (requires myNaz login)
Students who need a 1098-T from a tax year prior to 2017 should reach out to Student Accounts. Nazareth University no longer uses Xerox Technology Services to process the 1098-T forms.
