Heitzhaus, Hayford win Carey Sportsmanship Awards

Recent graduates Lauren Heitzhaus ’14 and Scott Hayford ’14 were the 2014 recipients of the Bill Carey Sportsmanship Award. The award recognizes fair play as well as well as athletic achievement.

Heitzhaus, a native of Buffalo N.Y., was a four-year member of the Nazareth women’s cross country team. She finished 19th at the 3.04-mile Empire 8 meet at Saratoga in 2012 and 24th in 2013. Heitzhaus will continue her time as a student at Nazareth College in the fall pursing her physical therapy doctorate.

Hayford, of Wilmington, Vt., was a four-year member of the Golden Flyers’ men’s basketball team. As a forward he started every game in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. He was also Nazareth’s representative as E8 Sportsman of the Year for both seasons. Hayford helped carry the team to the 2014 Empire 8 finals. He graduated with degrees in accounting and economics.

The Sportsmanship Award is named for Bill Carey, former athletic director and Sports Hall of Famer. Carey retired in 1998 after 18 years at Nazareth.
