New programs this fall at Nazareth

Published September 01, 2021

Nazareth is giving its students many paths and opportunities to success with relevant new and unique programs this fall. New options for undergraduates include a major in global sustainability. Grad students can choose to earn certificates or a full master's degree in people analytics and leadership (focused on the latest workforce human resource needs). Education students can take advantage of hybrid (part online) master's programs that are on campus just one night a week. And a new master's degree in public health begins in 2022.

College of Arts and Sciences

A new bachelor’s degree program in global sustainability begins in fall of 2021. This interdisciplinary program examines current issues in sustainability from the perspective of the social sciences, humanities, sciences, health sciences, and business. Students take core courses from a variety of options within different departments and disciplines to gain a holistic understanding of global sustainability concerns. Study away/abroad experiences are available to apply core principles to real life situations. “I was given the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica and volunteer on a sustainable farm during winter break,” said Emily Welch ‘21. “It was so interesting to view the different practices and to get a glimpse at what sustainability truly looks like and how much even small actions impact the environment around us. What a rewarding and educational experience!”

A re-imagined global studies major is now international and global studies. Students choose one of four tracks: Conflict, Security, and Resistance, Global Sustainability, Development Studies, or Cultural and Artistic Formations. This undergraduate degree helps to prepare them to enter a career in government, the foreign diplomatic service, intelligence agencies, business, journalism, law, or international service work. This major is also excellent preparation for graduate school in more specialized areas.

School of Business and Leadership

In 2021, the School of Business and Leadership launched an innovative program in people analytics and leadership. Students can choose to either pursue a 10-course master's degree or select any of the three-course sequences to earn an advanced graduate certificate. "The advanced certificates in this program are a fantastic way for professionals to increase their expertise and value in the workplace," says Laurie Zaucha, a senior human resources executive who retired from Paychex and has seen the evolution in the human resources field. "They address the key priorities for business today as demographic shifts and digital transformations shape the workforce and how we do business."

On the undergrad side, a new option allows students to double major in accounting and finance, completing the required 150 credits to pursue licensure as a certified public accountant (CPA), and gaining additional valuable skills — all in four years.

The leadership and organizational change (LOC) and marketing communications leadership (MCL) master's degree programs graduated their first cohorts of students in August 2021. The unusual one-weekend-a-month class schedule brings students to campus for two full days of small-group projects and learning."The LOC program has allowed me a tremendous opportunity to grow not only as a leader, but as a person,” said Jessica Marino Hicks '22G, recently promoted at Paychex. I have gained perspective outside of my norm, increased my self confidence, and made an impact on my community. A year into this program, I am not the same person who entered it. I have met some incredible people and know I have formed life-long friendships with my classmates. Giving up one weekend a month out of my social calendar is an investment I am willing to make to better my future."

School of Education

This past year, three graduate programs in the School of Education — literacy, inclusive adolescence, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) — moved to hybrid delivery model. Classes meet on campus only one day per week and the remainder of the program happens online.

Nazareth has received New York state education department (NYSED) approval to offer a certification-only program (post master's) leading to certification in literacy. “We are hoping to pull in a new population of learners with this program,” said Maria Hopkins director of Nazareth’s graduate literacy program in education. This program is for people who already have a master's degree and New York state teaching certification and want to add certification in literacy.” This is in addition to the literacy master’s degree for certified teachers who are eligible for additional certification as a literacy specialist, or who want to strengthen their ability to meet the needs of all students.

Health and Human Services

Nazareth leads the way with its array of health and human services programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. With the success of its undergraduate public health degrees, Nazareth now is state-approved to begin a master’s in public health, set to begin in the fall of 2022. Currently Nazareth offers both a bachelor of science and bachelor of arts in public health depending on a student’s career track, as well as a minor in public health.
