Mary Carlson

Biography

Mary C. Carlson, Emeritus Professor, received her M.Ed. and Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a concentration in the areas of Music Education, Wind Conducting, and Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. Dr. Carlson joined the music faculty as a full-time professor in 1999. During her tenure she taught undergraduate and graduate courses, conducted the Concert Band for 9 years, supervised student teachers and was the Undergraduate and Graduate Music Education director.

Prior to attending graduate school, Dr. Carlson taught instrumental music in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and completed the prestigious Calgary Conducting Diploma program where she studied conducting with Frank Battisti, Eugene Corporon, John Paynter, Donald Hunsberger, and Craig Kirchoff.

After 44 years of teaching at both the public school and collegiate levels, in 2022, Dr. Carlson retired from her full-time faculty position but continues to teach in the graduate music education program.
